New High School To Host Open House
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Last month, Charles D. Imbergamo, President and CEO of Cristo Rey Tampa High School and his staff hosted an Open House to allow parents and prospective students an opportunity to tour the campus.
He will host another Open House on Saturday, June 4th, from 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon. The school is located at 6400 E. Chelsea Avenue.
The opening of this campus in the fall marks the 32nd insti- tution in the nation designed strictly to educate children from low income families. The first school was opened by the Jesuits 20 years ago in Chicago.
The concept is unique in that the school offers students a vigorous program that fo- cuses on academics, work ex- perience, and character education. The students must maintain at least a “C” aver- age and maintain good disci- pline. They also cannot have more than 5 absences in a school year.
The school will launch its inaugural class of 100 to 125 9th grade students in the fall.
Ejirah Shellman and Ashley Hills, sisters and part of Cristo Rey Tampa’s inaugural class.
Jeremiah Alexander and Alexandra Martinez, also part of Cristo Rey Tampa’s inaugural class.
Charles D. Imbergamo, President and CEO of Cristo Rey Tampa High School and Corporate Work Study Program, touring parents and prospective students during the open house.
In order to graduate the stu- dents must have 4 credits of English, Mathematics, and Religious Studies; 3 credits of Science and Social Studies; 2 credits of Foreign Language and Fine Arts; 1 credit of Health and Physical Educa- tion and 5 credits of Electives.
The students will be re- quired to work five days per month as their contribution toward their own education. The program in which the children will be employed is referred to as the Corporation Work Study Program (CWSP).
Candidates for the Step Up
For Students Program will use the same qualifications as the free and reduced lunch price meals program in public schools.
The CWSP also prepares the youngsters for the real world job market. The money earned is applied to the child’s education.
In order to attend the school, parents must apply for the scholarship. Students cho- sen to attend must attend an intensive two-week program during the summer known as the Summer Bridge. The Summer Bridge provides a strong foundation during the
first school year.
