Mom Of Man Killed By Store Clerk Questions Robbery Claim
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On January 12th, An- thone Bryant, 22, died after being disconnected from life support. In the wake of his death, his family remains perplexed about the facts that led to his death.
Bryant was shot on January 11th, while at the Hope Convenience Store, corner of N. 22nd Street and E. Dr. M. L. King, Jr. Blvd.
His mother, Ms. Kat-
rina Bailey said, “I don’t
know what happened at
the store. He was working
as a cashier at Wal-Mart,
he had money at home, and he had $6 in his pocket. My son was not a thief.”
Ms. Bailey said she was told there is a video of the shooting. However, it does not have any sound. “You can’t hear what was said. My son frequented that store often and they knew him. He never got into any trouble up there. There is more to this than is being told.”
A Tampa native, Anthone (pronounced Antwane), at- tended the public schools of Hillsborough County. He studied for and earned his GED at Brewster Adult School.
After obtaining his GED, Bryant enrolled at Hillsborough Community College as a Business Administration major. His mother said his returning to school was his own idea. He made his own decisions from the beginning.
Ms. Bailey said her only son loved God and always spoke of God. He attended church at The Deliverance Church of the Body of Christ with his grandmother.
“He wouldn’t take anything. He would give people his last,” she said.
Prior to working at the Wal-Mart, Ms. Bailey said Anthone worked at a meat warehouse for about a year. Before that, he op- erated a mobile car detailing business.
In his spare time, he loved rap music and wrote many of his own songs. He enjoyed sports and staying active.
Ms. Bailey said, “My son listened to me. He avoided trouble and he wouldn’t get involved in a robbery. He had money and he had a paycheck coming.
“I found out that while he was working, a man went through his line and tried to get him not to scan some items. Anthone wouldn’t do it. They even got into a fight about it. But, the next day, he went to work as usual. He never said anything to me about it, he didn’t want me to worry. That was the kind of person he was.”
She also recalls that when he obtained his driver’s license, he listed himself as an organ donor. “I told him to take that off of his license and if that was what he wanted, I would make sure it happened and he had it removed.”
After Anthone passed, Ms. Bailey kept her word to him. His organs were donated so that others may live.
In addition to his mother, Bryant is survived by his father, Anthone Bryant, Sr., siblings, cousins, other family members and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Bryant will be held on Saturday. Wilson’s Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.
