Jim Hammond Named 2016 Parade Marshal
JAMES ‘JIM’ HAMMOND
Committee members of the Dr. Martin Luther King Pa- rade Foundation, Inc., have announced that James “Jim” Hammond will serve as Parade Marshal for the 27th Annual Martin Luther King Day Parade.
The parade will be held on Monday, January 18th, begin- ning at 12 noon.
A native of Tampa, Ham- mond graduated from Mid- dleton High School and furthered his education at Hampton Institute in Vir- ginia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1951.
Mr. Hammond served in

the U. S. Army in active duty and active duty reserves from 1951 to 1979. He was also president and owner of Ham- mond Electric, 1951-1975. He was employed by Jim Walter Corporation, 1974-1989.
He is a life member of the NAACP and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and a mem- ber of Beulah Baptist Institu- tional Church.
Mr. Hammond is affili- ated with many organizations and has received many awards and been honored on many occasions.
Jamaican Band Returns To The MLK Parade For 14th Year
For 14 years, the Jamacian Band, the Eagles Drum and Bugle Corps, will participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade.
Clarence Fort has been spearheading the project to bring the band to the United States, under Saturday’ Chil- dren, a ministry at New Mt. Zion M. B. Church.
Streets Closed For Parade
Several streets in East Tampa will be closed on Mon- day during the parade. Staging area roads (12th St.-18th St. and 21st Ave.) will be closed starting at5a.m.Therewillbeno parking in the staging/dis- banding areas starting at 8 p. m. Sunday. Violators will be subject to citations and/or their car being towed. Those who reside in the staging area will be al- lowed to park in the Cus- caden Parkfield. There will be no parking signs along 15th St. from 21st Ave.
Participants will start lin- ing up at 8 a.m. The parade will kick off at 15th St. and 21st Ave. and move north on 15th St. The parade then turns east on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. until it reaches 22nd St. where it will turn north. The parade will end at 22nd St. and E. Osborne Ave. The disband- ing area will be between Os- borne Ave. and Hillsborough Ave.
