Sentinel Recommendations
For the first time in
several years, the com-
munity has a wide variety
of qualified candidates,
many of them African
Americans, to serve in
publicoffice.Someofthe
choices were difficult to
make because we felt that
both candidates brought something of value to the table.
For the first time in Florida’s history we have qualified African American candidates running for governor (Andrew Gillum), the Attorney General’s Office, (Sean Shaw), and nu- merous local offices as well.
The Black community has not seen or heard from Bill Nel- son for years. However, we cannot support Rick Scott.
We feel that Andrew Gillum will move the state forward because he is concerned about the people. We feel that under his leadership, he will accomplish many of the things that he has promised.
The race for State Representative District 63 is one that has our Board split.
However, because we believe that when shining stars like Atty. Fentrice Driskell enter a race, we must do all we can to get them elected.
Black, female and educated.
A Harvard and Georgetown Law School graduate, Atty. Driskell has been an active member of the community since moving here. She is the former president of the George Edge- comb Bar Association. During her tenure she was instrumental in pushing an initiative within the association where she and fellow members scheduled forums to give FREE law advice to the community.
Atty. Driskell is running against incumbent, Republican Shawn Harrison.
Rep. Harrison is no stranger to the Black community, and has been considered a friend by many within our community, especially when he served on the Tampa City Council, before running for State office in 2010.
Atty. Harrison is what some refer to as a moderate Repub- lican. What we know is that Rep. Harrison will listen and at- tempt to help when asked.
However, the Republican majority Florida Legislature has caused great suffering and loss in our community: the majority of our community schools are underfunded and failing; the state core testing system has led to massive dropout rates and less ed- ucated children overall; the lack of gun control has led to gun violence becoming a daily thing in our communities, and almost all of the state supported health care funding has been voted into extinction.
These are the things that matter, and wreak havoc in our communities if we don’t have representatives who push for proper funding and laws that deal with the interest of mankind.
