A young man died in a traffic accident early Satur- day. Roderick Dante Lucas, II, was 22-years-old.
According to police, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the inter- section of Rome and Waters Avenue. He was stopping the 2007 Infiniti after he ob- served the driver with part of his body extended from the car and threatening to fight security personnel at 1701 W. Waters Avenue.
When the officer at- tempted to stop the vehicle, the driver, identified as Roderick Dante Lucas, II, sped away at a high rate of speed. The officer report- edly turned off his siren and disengaged the traffic stop.
A short time later, wit- nesses told police that the vehicle was observed travel- ing eastbound on Waters Av- enue at a high rate of speed. At some point, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a concrete support be-

neath the I-275 overpass. The vehicle burst into flames and Lucas died at the scene.
A Tampa native, Lucas was the son of Ms. Helen Lucas and the late Roder- ick Lucas, Sr. He attended the public schools of Hills- borough County. After grad- uating from Land O’Lakes High School, his mother said he contemplated entering the military, but obtained employment with the U. S. Postal Service. He had been employed as a Postman for
more than a year at the time of his death.
Ms. Lucas said of her oldest child, “I don’t think he would have been acting reck- less, that was not him.
“He took care of his fam- ily. He would do anything he could for you. He was loved by many. He was close to his 1-year-old son and loved spending time with him.”
Ms. Cherylene Levy
said he delivered the mail in her Northview Hills neigh- borhood. “He was loved by his co-workers and by the people he delivered the mail to. He was always very polite and loved to joke.”
In addition to his mother and son, Lucas is survived by 3 brothers, 1 sister, and other family members and friends.
Anyone wishing to con- tact the Lucas family can reach them at (813) 573- 1088.
Funeral services for Lucas were incomplete at press time. Wilson’s Funeral Home is in charge of han- dling arrangements.
