On Monday, a local busi- ness announced the recipi- ents of its 2018 grants. Spectrum representatives se- lected Computer Mentors as one of the recipients of its 2018 Spectrum Digital Edu- cation Grants.
Computer Mentors will receive $40,000 to expand its KidsCode Program to helping more than 1,000 youth in 2019.

“It helps to build a pipeline of much needed tal- ent for our businesses. More than 50 percent of today’s jobs require some degree of technology skills and accord- ing to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of software developers is pro- jected to grow much faster than the average for all occu- pations over the next 10 years.”

with the tools to grow and prosper in the digital age.”
Computer Mentors and 22 other deserving nonprofit organizations were chosen from among more than 170 applicants as Spectrum Digi- tal Education Grant recipi- ents — part of an overall $1 million commitment by Spectrum to provide digital education in the communi- ties it serves.
Spectrum Digital Educa- tion grants support organiza- tions that help educate families and seniors on the benefits of broadband and how to use it to improve their lives. Through the $1 million effort, Spectrum will also provide PSAs, workshops and other technical assis- tance to local nonprofits.
Smith and Spectrum representatives will host a recognition ceremony on Wednesday, January 9, be- ginning at 4 p.m. It will take place at the NFL YET Jack- son Heights Center, 3310 E. Lake Avenue, in Tampa.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Tampa Chapter, in conjunction with the 100 Black Men of Tampa Bay, Inc., will host their an- nual fundraiser. The event is designed to provide support to local women and girls. En- titled, “Death by Choco- late: A Decadent Dessert Affair,” will take place on February 17th.
It will be held at the Hip Room Dance Studio, 1701 North Franklin Street, in Tampa, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Designed as an upscale event, those in attendance will have the opportunity to sam- ple chocolate inspired delica-
cies from Bay Area culinary professionals. The experience will also include complimen- tary wine and the world renowned sounds of Tampa saxophonist Marlon Boone.
The event is open to the public and proceeds will be used for educational, health, and social wellness program- ming for women and girls in the community.

Business Expansion Summit Is Friday

Friday, January 11, 2019, one of the first events to cele- brate The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival is the Busi- ness Expansion Summit.
The Summit will be held at the Entrepreneur Collabora- tive Center, 2101 E. Palm Ave., Tampa (33605).
The summit kicks off at 10:30 a. m. and continues until 12 noon. Doors open at 10 a. m. Lunch will be pro- vided.
Spearheaded by Bill Trotman of TD Bank, who is the founder and coordinator of the Business Summit, the event will feature several speakers as well as panelists. Leighton Kyler is the Semi- nar Moderator.

Trotman started the Business Expo several years ago and in recent years has partnered with the annual Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival.
Throughout the year, Trotman hosts several busi- ness expos to cover various areas of business. In addition to the Tampa Bay Black Her- itage Festival, the events are powered by Trotman’s em- ployer, TD Bank.
