Former Hillsborough County Sheriff Dies
MALCOLM BEARD
A former Hillsborough County Sheriff died Thursday morning. Malcolm Beard was 99-years-old.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Beard joined the Tampa Police Department in the 1940s. He was elected to serve as the Constable for
Hillsborough County in 1957. He served in that capacity until 1964, when he was elected as the Sheriff of Hills- borough County. Sheriff
Beard retired in 1978. Following his retirement, Sheriff Beard served in the Florida House of Representa- tives from 1978 until 1980. He was elected as a member of the State Senate in 1979, and served in that capacity
until 1996.
A native of Moultrie,
Georgia, Sheriff Beard moved to Florida with his family in 1924. As an adult, he served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.
In 2013, the Operations Center at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was named the Malcolm E. Beard Operations Center in his honor.
Mother Continues To Hope Son’s Murder Will Be Solved

Warren D. Mitchell, Sr., would have been prepar- ing to celebrate his 39th birth- day. Instead, his family will remember him on January 9th.
Mitchell was killed 14 years ago, on August 1st, 2004. His murder remains an unsolved case.
His mother, Ms. Wanda Conaway, is still hoping after 14 years, that someone will come forward with infor- mation to solve the case.
“My son’s case is still un- solved. I need someone to come forward with informa- tion. I know that someone out there knows who is responsi- ble for his murder,” Ms. Conaway said.
According to Tampa Po- lice, Mitchell was near the

intersection of Columbus Drive and MacDill Street when the unidentified as- sailant shot him. He drove a short distance further before summoning help.
Shortly after 9 p.m., on
August 1, 2004, Mitchell, 25, contacted a Tampa Police officer that he had been shot and needed help. The officer called Fire Rescue and life- saving measures were taken at the scene. Mitchell was transported to Tampa Gen- eral Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
Detectives with the Tampa Police Department investi- gated the homicide. However, no one has been arrested and charged with the murder.
Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information leading to the identity, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for this murder.
