traffic tended not to appear until at least
seven in the morning so Sam started to
cross the road wishing for his bed. He had
got two thirds of the way across the road
when he suddenly heard the sound of a
vehicle’s breaks pressed down hard with a
deafening screech. Then everything went
black.
