This new book tells the story of the foundation in Japan of
the Nippon Kogaku company, known nowadays more
simply as Nikon, a predominant company in the field of
optics and camera work.
Founded in 1921 and employing German experts, the
company grew to be predominant in its field, assisted by
the passion for photography that grew in Japan and
elsewhere in the early twentieth century.
After the effects of the First World War receded and military

company founded Nippon Kogaku K. K. to produce the
optical glass necessary for high-quality microscopes,
telescopes, and photographic lenses. Above all it provided
"optical ammunition" to the Japanese armed forces until the
last day of the Pacific War, on 15th August 1945.
Defeat pushed Japan to face a difficult future, but factories
and foreign trade soon reopened for business. Nippon
Kogaku embarked upon the path of photography and
precision instruments that would contribute to it becoming
a leader in the sector.
