What We Have Learned
One thing is evidently clear: we need easy, abundant access to reliable, affordable, and fast detection indicators.
Current diagnostic test methods detect viruses using a biological process called polymerase chain reaction (”PCR”) for detecting viral genetic material (RNA or DNA). Unfortunately, these types of tests do not meet the need:
Takes too long: 3+ hour test with multiple, complicated steps, requiring expensive equipment and trained professionals, further compounded by logistical delays for specimen delivery to labs, queues, and processing errors.
Slow screening process: Creates challenges in high traffic/high population areas (airports, stadiums, offices, etc.)
Low reliability: Multi-stage and complex tests produce a high rate of false negatives.
False sense of confidence: Provide only a snapshot and does not satisfy the need for convenient repeat testing.
Highly inconsistent: Health-care systems are highly fragmented with respect to virus testing and produce inconsistent results across different test laboratories.
