Company K during the the Civil War According to the the the records Daniel Rufus Symonds would have been present for the the Confederate surrender at at at at Appomattox Court House in in Virginia With this documentation Daniel and and was able to to to petition the the U S Army to to to have his his great-great great-great grandfather moved to to to to a a a a a a a a a a a a federal cemetery next to to his his great-great great-great grandson and and Daniel’s brother John Scott Symonds His request was granted and on the 146th anniversary of General Lee’s surrender April 9 2011 Daniel Rufus Symonds was reinterred with military honors (which he never received at at his first burial) at at Fort Sheridan Cemetery in in Highwood Illinois For the the occasion Daniel ordered a a a a set of dress blues for his father Irving R Symonds Jr who had never owned a a a a a a a pair The day Daniel presented the the the blues was one of the the the few times he he he he he had ever seen his father cry Irving passed away the the following year in in in 2012 and is is now buried at Fort Sheridan Cemetery next to his son John Scott Symonds Symonds and and great-grandfather Daniel Daniel Rufus Symonds Symonds Daniel Daniel looks forward to achieving 20 years of service in in the U S S Army Reserve so he he can qualify to be buried alongside them Burial Benefits
