Calm before the Storm
Linda names Pat Conroy as an inspiration, for “his voice, his lyrical prose and sense of place.” She has had the same editor for most
of her books. She doesn’t keep a journal, but remembers events and conversations from the many times she tells her experiences to
family and friends. And as for the people she writes about, she said they love being mentioned, and the only ones who were upset
were those who were left out. A genre she would like to try? Children’s books. She said any future writing would likely follow the
“salty” themes of Maine life and fishing.
Linda’s next adventures though, will be back on the water and not at the keyboard – a charter business. Two years ago, she started
taking charters on her lobster boat between fishing days. She did 50 in 2019, but that boat can only carry six passengers under Coast
Guard regulations, so she bought a bigger boat that will accommodate 49. “People come to Maine and want to get on a boat,” she
said. Operating from Surry, she will offer a mix of pre-set trips and custom charters, including hiking and picnic expeditions, pulling
lobster traps, stargazing, cocktail or dinner cruises, weddings and memorials, and weekly trips to Isle au Haut’s portion of Acadia
National Park. She recently took an aquaculture
course and purchased 40,000 baby oysters, so oyster
farming will be part of the tours. The best part of
the expeditions, she said, is that the boat rides will
be “gorgeous.”
