 Chapter Nine TAPPING
PART ONE
Sweaty palms, racing heart, tight throat, an awful feeling in your gut, the urge to run...you now know these are the ef- fects of high levels of adrenaline and cortisol in your system (and by now I hope you have stopped calling them the symp- toms of anxiety!). It does not matter if you are injected with these hormones through an IV or syringe, or if Homer, the guy or gal in your amygdala, threw open the tap and flooded you!
If you were to feel these effects because someone opened the flow on your IV, close it, and the symptoms disappear. Similarly, if you’re feeling the symptoms because of Homer, you need to convince him to do the same. We have already talked about how to work with Homer to stop him from working so hard: Give him what he wants.
“Homer, you wanted my attention; you got it!” “Homer, you want to keep me safe, I am going to help.”
