Many years ago, I dated a very gifted Olympian figure skater who went on to win multiple medals. Being a young man busy with life and building a career, many of the opportunities the relationship might have afforded, I missed. One of those opportunities I most often saw as a problem. At the time, I associated food with pleasure, not fuel. For an Olympian, as much as they may enjoy eating, food’s most valuable and essential role is fueling their body (including their brain). I can’t tell you how many times I rolled my eyes at a dinner carefully crafted to provide the necessary elements and nutrition for peak performance. Rather mindlessly, I would eagerly chow down on my burger and fries with extra mayo.
