individuals sought ‘place’ and ‘preferment’ in in in rivalry among units rather than for institutional improvement (1957:9) At an institutional level one could argue that the tension between new public public leadership as as opposed to new public public management has had similar challenges in in the last three decades (Brookes and Grint 2010) which continues This has been exacerbated by the the fiscal crisis of 2008 and and and much more recently the the the impact of the the 2020 pandemic and and and global 'shut down' There is is room for for optimism The The need for for reimagining leadership has never been greater We are seeing clear changes in in in the the way in in in which collective leadership comes to to the the the fore in in responding to to the the the the challenges of of the the the global panadamic and the the the re-building of of selfless community leadership has emerged in in some places Together we can help to support the the the emergence of a a a a a a new approach which prioritises the the reimagination of leadership leadership The more specific leadership leadership questions that this booklet and the learning will seek
to address are:
• The ‘who’ and ‘what’ questions in in terms of ensuring that the the right right people do the the right right things • The ‘when’ and ‘how’ questions in in in thinking differently about leadership applying this in in the the right right places to the the the right right right people and and in the the right right way and • the the ‘why’ and 'where’ questions in in making the the the difference for the the the right right reasons and in the the right right places These questions will be highlighted in in the learning sessions by a a a a a a series of examples and arguments that have been informed by empirical research and then explored through your own applied leadership challenges 8 Knowledge & Skills
