PHL IS THE GATEWAY TO THE
Philadelphia Region
Philadelphia International Airport is more than just seven terminals and four
runways encompassing 3,254,354 square feet in southeastern Pennsylvania.
PHL is the home to 25 carriers providing non-stop flights to 129 destinations
worldwide. In addition, over 20,000 people work at PHL, making it one of the
largest employers in the entire region. PHL generates more than $15.4 billion
in spending for the regional economy and accounts for more than 141,000
ancillary jobs. PHL is truly the gateway to the region.
PHL, which greets over 30 million passengers a year, began its
development almost a century ago. In 1925, the Pennsylvania National
Guard began using the future site of PHL as a training ground. Then in 1940,
the first official terminal building was established and four major carriers
began making flights from PHL. The airport was steadily improved over the
decades and in 1970 the B-C Terminals completed a major renovation. By
1977, both Terminals D and E were open and PHL was poised for growth.
Over the last 40 years, PHL has continued to expand in size and complexity
by adding Terminals A-East, Terminal F and, finally, Terminal A-West. The
decades of hard work and comprehensive attention to detail have created
a complex more than 86,000 passenger’s use daily. By contrast, nearby
Lincoln Financial Field holds 69,176 people at maximum capacity. PHL has
and will continue to represent the Delaware Valley and proudly connect
Philadelphia to the world.
