In the Mirror
A Collection of Iconographic Essays and illustrations
by Fr. Stamatis Skliris
This collection of iconographic essays and illustrations by Fr. Stamatis Skliris is an an- thology of his articles, translated into Eng- lish, in which he combines adherence to the teachings of the Church Fathers with a vibrant expression of faith through the ex- perience of Christ in the Church. The book is adorned with more than 200 of his strik- ing icons and illustrations. Although he basically employs a dark Byzantine under- painting, adding to it light “accents” (illu- minations), he still plays with colors in such an impressionist manner that his work gains a “non-determinism of color.” Stamatis articulates a dialogue with mod- ern art by evaluating the brush strokes of Van Gogh Cézanne, Monet’s colors, Matisse’s forms, Picasso’s Cubism, and Post-modernism. Stamatis reminds us of the times when Church had the ability to shape the culture; yet, he does not copies ready-made solutions from the icono- graphic past but researches everything anew; a strong experimental sense is at his disposal, and he combines strictly tradi- tional elements with those that are mod- ern.

The Art of Seeing
Paradox and Perception in Orthodox Iconography
by Fr. Maximos Constas
The Art of Seeing explores sacred images in light of Orthodox theology, making spe- cial use of perspectives and insights from the patristic interpretation of sacred texts. Drawing on the disciplines of art history, aesthetics, and theology, this innovative study explores the phenomenon of para- dox – at once artistic, visual, and cognitive – through which sacred images disturb the eye and provoke the mind to reflection. This book is concerned with the meaning of the icon within the Orthodox tradition and yet yields to none in its scholarly cre- dentials. It is beautifully written: the fre- quent insights are expressed in compelling language. On page after page, one finds oneself looking at even familiar figures in icons with fresh eyes, often as if seeing them for the first time. Together they make a satisfying book, the unity being provid- ed, not by a series of complementary themes, but by the mind and eye of Fr Maximos.
