30 Made in the end of a heaving line, w ith a metal ball or similar
weight, inserted into the weave. its purpose is to give carrying
quality to the line.
Monkey's Measure off nine hand turns of line and work from this point back
towards the ta il end, inserting the weight before completing the
Fist last three turns. Work the knot tight and to shape, cutting off and
burying the ta il end.
As heaving line is a comparatively expendable item a separate fist
can be made of a better quality cordage, w ith a protruding eye, to
which the heaving line is made fast. By this method the fist can
be re-used w hen it becomes necessary to replace the line. To do
this an eye splice is first formed in the end of the line and the
splice buried in the first turns.
