I believe that every child deserves an opportunity to fulfill his or her dream. William
Ward said it best when he stated that, “adversity causes some to break; others to break

records.” The record books of the world are replete with examples of record breakers who

have experienced hardships in their lives. The island of Jamaica has made its mark in the
records book as prime example.

It has always been a dream of mine to give back to my maternal country, Jamaica. I

grew up knowing that I was fortunate to have access to opportunities, but so many other

children were not as fortunate. One of Jamaica’s most vulnerable population is young people, of
which a third of the male youth population is at-risk. Despite the athleticism of Jamaican kids,

there are simply not enough opportunities for them to use their athleticism to better their lives.

Opening the doors to participate in other sports, especially core American sports, provides
access to opportunities for advancement for Jamaican kids that they otherwise would not have.
Nicole Birch, Esq. I’m thankful for my supportive family and friends who encouraged me to pursue the

Founder formation of the Jamaican American Athletic Development, Inc. What started out as my vision,

Executive Director is now our vision as we embark on creating an infrastructure of opportunity for the

advancement of Jamaica’s youth through American sports. I welcome and look forward to

building on our network of support to be agents of change for Jamaica’s youth.
