Yaakov lived with the truth of the Torah. The Torah describes him as
, whose letters have the same numerical value as the word .
Yaakov was also , symbolizing the two worlds we live in. He
was able to connect this world and the next to form a unified whole,
through the middah of emet.
Eisav was a man of the world and at home in the wild. He chose a life of
sheker to enjoy this world’s illusive pleasures.
Our world has a dual existence, that of emet as well as sheker. This is in
contrast to the next world that has nothing but truth. Our job in this world
is to uncover the lie of falsehood and live a life of emet.
“The lads grew up and Eisav became one who
knows hunting, a man of the field; but Yaakov
was a wholesome man, abiding in tents”
(Bereishit 25:27)
