the dead. This power was revealed to Moses in the form of the name
“I Will Be That I Will Be.” It was Moses who later led all of Israel in
the Song of the Sea, one of the most inspirational collective moments
in Jewish history.
The Hebrew word translated as “I Will Be” has the numerical
value of 21 and is deemed one of God’s names in its own right. Since
“I Will Be” appears twice in the lengthier name “I Will Be That I
Will Be,” Kabbalah notes that when the numerical value of “I Will
Be” is squared it equals 441, the numerical value of the Hebrew word
for truth (emet). Peoples’ inner songs reflect their inner truths, the
essential truths and sense of purpose that guide them in life. This is
what God was trying to help Moses reach by revealing His name to
him, “I Will Be That I Will Be.”

One of Judaism’s basic goals is the unification of the physical and
spiritual realms, both on the practical and mystical levels. The
relationship between the physical and the spiritual can be compared
to that of matter and energy. Science changed our perception of
reality forever when it revealed that matter is in essence pure energy.
Similarly, when physicality is stripped of its exterior form, we find
an inner core brimming with spiritual potential. The physical and
the spiritual, like matter and energy, are two sides of the same coin,
intrinsically bound together.
The pursuit of this profound truth not only has implications for how
a Jew serves God and lives every day of his or her life but is intimately
bound up with the final redemption and Mashiach’s task in the
world. For Mashiach’s primary goal is not political power or military
domination, it is to educate humanity, to introduce an irreversible

much abuse for their beliefs and showed so much indomitable spirit
in carrying on generation after generation.
The same fortitude that has allowed the Jewish people to overcome
or outlast their external enemies is also crucial to allowing them
to succeed in their internal task of training their untamed minds.
For despite the common belief that the mind cannot be trained, 7
determination is all that is needed to gain considerable control of the
mind. Although we may not be able to control our every thought
and fantasy, we can choose whether or not to give in to negativity
and allow fantasy free reign. When God told Moses that he need not
worry for He would go with him to Pharaoh, He was not merely
comforting Moses. He was teaching both Moses and the future
generations that if we turn to God, He will not only assist us but
serve as our ally in prioritizing spiritual progress and training our
minds to hold dominion over our emotions.

One of the most fascinating ways to learn Torah and delve into its
inner teachings is by tracing the pattern a word or concept makes
as it weaves itself through the fabric of the text. As we “connect
the dots” between the appearances of the word or concept a picture
begins to form revealing its very nature. The Hebrew infinitive “to
know” appears many times in various forms in the first three portions
of Exodus. A deep analysis of this word provides us with a key to
understanding the bigger picture, the context, in which the slavery
and redemption from Egypt took place.
In “The Meaning of the Name Shemot” we demonstrated how the
book of Shemot is fundamentally about knowledge. Shemot is called
the book of names because it introduces, as it were, God’s essential
four-letter name to the world and reveals how Jacob’s family was
transformed into the nation of Israel. Using the keyword “to know,”
