the future. Had Moshe been granted entry into Eretz Yisrael, he would
have built the Beit Hamikdash, which would have endured forever.
Hashem would then have had to cast His wrath upon His people, chas
v’shalom, when they would subsequently sin. Due to His tremendous love
for His nation, He led Moshe to sin, so that he would not enter the Land.
This is what Moshe meant by saying, “Hashem became angry with me
because of you.” 4

The sin of the spies, which occurred on Tishah b’Av, was a harbinger of
the future churban. The nation had cried for nothing; Hashem established
that day as a day for weeping for generations. This sin prevented Moshe
from entering the Land. Moshe’s prayer to enter Eretz Yisrael is recorded
before mention of Kabbalat HaTorah in order to impress upon us that
derech eretz precedes the Torah. Only a mouth unsullied by slanderous
speech is capable of speaking words of Torah.

“But Hashem became angry with me because
of you, and He did not listen to me: Hashem
said to me: It is too much for you! Do not
continue to speak to Me further about this
matter”
