Garage Lab,
INNOVATION SPACES Indraprastha Institute of Information
Technology Delhi
As the diversity of student projects and research activities grew, we felt the need of
adding new resources to our existing prototyping facilities (labs). In 2017, we added a
high-end Printed Circuit Board (PCB) fabrication machine from LPKF that allows
students and faculty to rapidly prototype their circuits in-house. Furthermore, we
bought a new Laser Cutting machine that enables, previously missing, us to rapidly cut
any 2D patterns from a variety of materials including wood, plastic, cloth, etc. and
similarly engrave 2D patterns on stone and metal as well. Students typically use this
machine for making casing for their prototypes. Additionally, we now have a sewing
machine to fill the gap for wearable and soft prototypes. Numerous power tools and
hand tools were also added. To keep the innovation engine running, we also multiplied
the quantity and variety of materials that we now keep in store. These materials range
from cheap, readily available (e.g., clay, corrugated sheets) to special purpose,
cuttingedge (e.g., conductive thread and fabrics). Though most of these resources are
housed in our maker space, also called the Garage Lab, we carry some of these
materials to classrooms as well for in-class learning activities.
