Measles Initiative Fundraising Update
Lion Nia Mackay Dallas Oak Cliff
The Measles Initiative fundraising has concluded on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. The Oak Cliff Lions Club's First VP and Measles Initiative Fundraising Committee chair, Lion Anastasia Semos, has turned in a total of $ 2,302.00 raised between March and April 2018 at last Wednesday May 23rd, 2018 program. The matching fund in the amount of $2,400.00 was also presented after the announcement by Bob Shelton of the Shelton Water Purifying Company, Dallas TX. This amount will eventually be quadrupled by UK AID, GAVI, and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation once it's received by the LCIF. This means that around 8000 kids in Africa will receive measles vaccination.
As most of you know, the MI Committee fundraising raised the money by holding a special event “Skate for Measles” at Galleria Ice Skating Center in mid March and a total of 5 Gavel Travels to Park Cities LC, White Rock LC, Allen High Noon LC, Cedar Hill LC, and Midlothian LC. The MI Fundraiser Committee, Lions Anastasia Semos, Sara Kitto, Sheryll McKay, Hank Jones and Nia MacKay, appreciated all the support and donation from
Lions to make this possible. From the bottom of our heart: Thank you!
(L to R) OCLC President Lion John McCall Jr., Bob Shelton, CEO Shelton Water Refining, and the upcoming president, 1st VP and Measles Initiative Fundraiser Committee chair, Lion Anastasia Semos receiving the matching donation from SWR in the amount of $2,400.00.
2018 Opening Eyes Program at Special Olympic at UTA
Lion Nia Mackay Dallas Oak Cliff
The 2018 'Opening Eyes Clinic’ sponsored by Lions Club International Foundation was held at the Special Olympic on Friday, May 25th from 9 AM to 4 PM and Saturday, May 26th from 10 AM to 3 PM at the University of Arlington’s Student Center, Arlington Texas. This is the 11th year of the
program lead by Lion Dr. Charles Shidlofsky, a Plano Early Lions Club
member. On Saturday alone, there were more than 230 athletes (age 12 and up) being examined thoroughly from the regular vision acuity, to depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movements, peripheral or side vision, and pupils respond to light. The reason for this extensive eye examination is that because most of the athletes have a wide range of developmental disabilities, which also impaired their eyes condition. After the exam, the athletes got to pick their frames for their prescription glasses. All free of charge, courtesy of LCIF, Essilor, Galisano, and Safilo Group.
To accommodate the service for these athletes during the event, Lion Charles (who also known as 'Dr. S’) has volunteers, not only Lions from District 2-X1, but also Optometrist students from both UT Arlington and UT Houston. For more information regarding this annual program contact Lion Dr. Charles Shidlofsky (Plano Early LC) at Dr-S@dr-s.net.
