Duncanville Lions Receives Excellence Award
Coach Lion Cathy Self-Morgan (Duncanville Noon Lions Club member) has led Duncanville High School Basketball Team to back-to- back Class 6A state championships and has won five state titles at the school. Duncanville finished 39-2 this season, beating Cypress Ranch 76-65 in the state championship game. That followed a 39-0 season. The Duncanville girls’ basketball coach has been named one of two coaches nationally to win the Gatorade Coaching Excellence Award.
Lion Cathy Self-Morgan will be honored at the 15th annual Gatorade Athlete of the Year Awards. She will have the opportunity to walk the red carpet at the ESPY Awards in July in Los Angeles. The award,
established in 2016, honors two coaches who have made an impact on the lives of their student-athletes and whose commitment to their profession goes beyond the game.
"She is dedicated, selfless and a true inspiration to her team," Jeff Kearney, global head of sports marketing for Gatorade, said of Self-Morgan. "Coaches are such a vital part of a young athlete's development that to be able to recognize and celebrate some of the best is truly an honor for Gatorade."
Self-Morgan has grown quite familiar with winning awards, not to mention games. She has led Duncanville to five state titles, including the past two seasons. Between 2012 to 2014, she led Duncanville to 105 consecutive wins. Prior to that, Self-Morgan won three state titles at Westlake (Austin). All told, she has more than 1,000 wins and just over 200 losses.
"It's overwhelming," Self-Morgan said of the award. "When [Gatorade representatives called me, I was thinking they were going to honor one of my players. When they explained it, I was drop-mouthed. I'm grateful and humbled because there are so many other coaches -- people I look up to -- who could've been given this honor."

Zone 10 Responds to Disaster
As the news of our neighbors in both Canton and Eustace having suffering much damage from the recent tornadoes, we all wanted to help!
Balch Springs, Forney, Kaufman, Terrell and Seagoville Sunset of the Zone 10 Team stepped up and gave a cash donation of $2100 to the Canton Lions to assist those hurt by those terrible storms throughout their community. Mabank gave a cash donation to the City of Eustace along with their associate member Lion Joe Kile in securing much needed supplies and help from area merchants. Lion Joe was able to get LOWE'S to donate 3 teams of volunteers to assist in the clean-up and rebuild for 2 weeks. Lions helping and serving our neighbors in the wake of disaster says a lot about how “WE SERVE”.
