This Issues Note is the result of work led by the OECD Global Relations Secretariat (GRS) under the
supervision of Alexander Boehmer (Head of the OECD Jakarta Office) and Alessandro Goglio (Head
of Division). It was written by Kazumasa Oba, Junior Policy Analyst, in the GRS Southeast Asia
Division with valuable input from Antonio Fanelli (OECD GRS), Malory Greene (OECD GRS) and
Mariarosa Lunati (Statistics Directorate). Editorial assistance was provided by Vanessa Vallee and
Grace Dunphy. The report was prepared under the guidance of Marcos Bonturi (Global Relations
Secretariat) with contributions from staff in the Global Relations Secretariat, the Centre for
Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Local Development, and the Statistics Directorate.
The report builds on a survey of existing SME statistics in Myanmar, which was carried out by the
OECD in co-operation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the United
Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and whose results were discussed at the
workshop “Strengthening SME Policy Development through Data Enhancement in Myanmar”, held
on 30 June 2015 in Yangon.
The OECD Secretariat would like to thank all participants who attended the workshop for their
invaluable comments. The excellent support of the Ministry of Industry in carrying out this project is
also gratefully acknowledged.
The project benefitted from the financial support of Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
