The third new sport introduced at Wardlaw, which has been accepted with great enthusiasm, is Varsity Wrestling, coached very ably by Mr. Harold Breene. The future of wrestling at Wardlaw is a bright one although this year's "matmen" were unable to carry home as many triumphs as hoped because they lacked experience.
In the Varsity's first match of the season, it encountered the ST. BERNARD'S VARSITY, and Wardlaw emerged with a 23 to 15 victory over the wrestlers from Peapack-Gladstone. This taste of success was short-lived, however, and
Wardlaw's wrestlers proceeded to lose their four remaining matches, beginning with the PINGRY JUNIOR VARSITY by a score of 42 to 10, MONTCLAIR ACADEMY to the tune of 15 to 33, and ENGLEWOOD ACADEMY, 23 to 15, thus ending their first season of competition sporting a one-win and four- loss record.
This tally, however, does not give a true picture of Wardlaw's first inter scholastic competition, as on several occasions they were forced to forfeit valuable points, as they had no squad members weighing in at specific weight levels. Coach Breene was considerably pleased with his team's showing, since his boys did, in his estimation, an admirable job against squads with several years of wrestling experience behind them. All of us at Wardlaw look for big things from Mr. Breene's "matmen" when the 1961 season rolls around.
