 Informality Marks Chess Club

It was another good year for the Wardlaw Chess Club, which Mr. Robert A. Paoli directed again. Greater informality than previously marked the organization during the 1968-69 school term.
Although there were no elected officers, Bruce G. Barnett was senior member. He also served as secretary-treasurer for the Union County Chess League.
A new facet of the club’s program was inclu­ sion of middle schoolers, membership having been formerly limited to high-school chess players.
The competing team, consisting of Barnett, Gary M. Shrager, Douglas H. May, Joseph Y. Abrams, and J. Russell Pearson, participated in matches with other Union County chess clubs.
With added middle-school membership, the number of active clubmen was raised to 35, mak­ ing the group one of Wardlaw’s most popular ac­ tivities.
Emphasis was placed upon playing for recrea­ tion, but improvement of basic skills was also stress­
