 Alice Rosamond Pardee Prizie
The Alice Rosamond Pardee pri2,e for English was won in 1931 by Mary Sargent, with an essay called “My Selves.”
Poem
Black wind, demon,
Raging down the night sky— Mad beast, mad god.
Driving dark and storm cloud
Rend the midnight forest; smite the skyward cypress.
Scratch the night with lean claws; quake the earth beneath you Roar down the dark flues; stir the graying embers.
Snarl; bare your blue fangs; moan, rave, whisper.
Night wind, mad wind— Man is fool to fear you,
A mad beast, a mad god Doomed to die at dawning
