Nature’s Classroom
CLASS OF 2011
Nature’s Classroom provides opportunities for students to take part in learning experiences that cannot easily take place inside classroom walls. The sixth grade spent five days at Nature's Classroom in Silver Bay, New York, where they shared experiences that increased their understanding o f the natural environment, their school subjects, and the dynamics of group living. They spent each morning hiking in “field groups” to
learn about Silver Bay. Each afternoon, students chose two special interest classes, where they learned about a range of topics through hands-on activities. M ealtim es also presented opportunities for reflection— leftover food on plates was weighed at each meal and graphed throughout the week so students could see that their personal choices impact the use of resources. Each night consisted of a longer activity with a focus on
building confidence through group challenges, concluding with a quiet sing and many heavy eyelids.
