Even a casual observer in the study hall of the Hartridge Day School will notice a patch of hrilliant blue on the back wall. But this is no mere patch. It is a banner bearing the inspiring legend, “Onward and Up­ ward.” Not far above it one sees the picture of a rather uncomfortable looking and scantily clad man sitting near the edge of what is evidently
an arched roof. At first glance it might appear that the aforesaid in­ scription is the motto of this man. However, this is not so. The T. H. S. in the upper left hand corner is not the monogram of the man who has already reached a lofty height, but rather it simply means “The Hart­ ridge School.” The 1926 in the lower right hand corner has nothing at all to do with the altitude attained by the man in the picture, or with any other measurements. Instead, it signifies that the banner is the possession
of the Class of 1926. After all this explanation it may be deduced that “ Onward and Upward” is the Seniors’ motto.
Trite though this motto may be, it is nevertheless suggestive of high ideals, and with it in mind we are ever striving to be as progressive and
exalted as possible.

At last I reached that well known, narrow passage. Groping at the entrance, I steadied myself lest I slip and fall down the steep, rugged incline leading to a lower chamber of almost impenetrable darkness. The
mortals who had finished their work in that deep, dark chasm were steadily climbing upwards towards the daylight. I cautiously felt my way down. In my mind’s eye I had lost my footing and had crashed to the bottom of
the fathomless darkness. Covered with furs as I was, each contact with one of that rising procession caused an electric shock to tingle through my W'hole body. At last the chamber was gained. My last hope was realized. I then proceeded to find a coat hanger and joined my friends on their
