VARSITY SOCCER
Although the varsity soccer team suffered a disappointing 3-8-1 record, the squad played well all year and was never beaten badly. The team was coached by Mr. Clark Whelton and led by Captain Ronald Kent.
With many players, including Kent, Bill Pratt, Bill Dubin, Rodger Whipple, Jim Stewart, Hugh McPhee, Pete Pomeroy, and John Robson, re turning from last year's squad, the season looked promising. Injuries, however, hurt the team throughout the season; and the opposing teams were much improved.
The season began with a disappointing 3-2 loss to St. Bernard's,but the Rams bounced back to trounce Carteret 6-0. The Rams then met
South Plainfield and lost a heartbreaking 1-0 de cision, failing to score on three penalty kicks. In another closely-fought battle, Wardlaw fell to Montclair Academy, with Mike Seligmann's tally the lone Ram goal.
The Rams then got back on the winning track by defeating Morristown School 3-2 behind goals by Bill Dubin and Ron Kent. Then in a big game with Rutgers Prep, bad breaks once again plagued the Rams; and they lost 2-1 in a gruel ing contest.
Except for a late season 5-2 win over Morris town, the Rams' best game was a 0-0 tie with St. Bernard s.The other games resulted in losses to Englewood, Rutgers Prep, Montclair Academy and Collegiate.
