VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY
The 1964 squad was the best cross-country team ever fielded at Wardlaw. The Ram har riers posted an 8-2 record in dual meets and finished second in the Prep School " B ” State Meet.
The varsity consisted of nine runners: seniors Bob Smithers (captain), Clay Beall, and Terry Walz; juniors Dave Larison, Rich Rugen, and Greg Sandford; sophomore Flip Connell; and freshmen Keith Larison and Dave Scales.
The season opened with a surprisingly easy win over College High 21-38; but in the second meet, with several starters ill, the harriers fell before Hun 27-28. Three days later Wardlaw butchered Montclair Academy 18-45, followed
by a 15-50 subjugation of Carteret School and a 19-42 romp over Rutgers Prep. At Morristown School, however, the Rams fell by a 23-25 count, although Smithers won his fifteenth straight race in two years.
The harriers then finished out the year with more easy victories. They whipped College High 22-37, then gained revenge on Hun by slaughter ing them and Rutgers Prep in a triangle meet 22- 47-60. Solebury School, 16-46, and Montclair Academy, 17-47, were the final victims.
In the state meet Smithers won his second straight title, with Dave Larison fifth, Rugen seventh, Sandford fourteenth, and Beal seven teenth.
