VARSITY TRACK
The 1965 varsity track team, under the direction of Coaches Clark Whelton and Harold Breene, was hungry after two winless years for an improved season. Lettermen Dave Shay and Clay Beall co-captained the squad. Shay competed in sprints and high and broad jumps. Last year he had set records in the latter two. Beall ran the 440 and broad jumped.
The only other returning letterman was Bob Smithers, holder of the school 220 and mile records. The lanky senior specialized this year in the mile.
Rounding out the trio of milers were Rich Rugen and freshman Dave Scales. Greg Sandford and Jeff Heim, juniors, and freshman Tim Fort ran the 880.
The shot-putting corps was led by Tim Perry and Rick Husted. Rick Tittmann (sprints and high jump), Dean Hoff man (440), Neil Kessner (sprints), and Hugh McPhee (shot put and sprints) were also looking for letters.
Early in the season the squad demolished the Carteret School and beat St. Bernard's. Shay tallied 20 points in the Carteret meet, and Smithers racked up his twelfth straight dual-meet mile victory against the Saints.
