( \]\]’'iincHscd hif the Ijar^esi Pumpkin)
1 and some others, grinning and bright, Watched all the fun on Hallowe’en night.
Into the room, mvsterionslv dim,
Came the (jiiaint figures, alone and by twos; Silent, deceiving, grotescjnely arrayed—
How we all wondered which head was whose! Hawaiian maidens, lightly clad.
Danced in front of a sailor lad;
A devil, red, and s\])orting a tail.
Made some faint-hearted ladies quail; A diiffv owl looked verv wise. Chasing a girl in Indian guise;
A \])irate waved an awful knife. Meaning, “Vonr money or your life!” Mutt and Jeff, together still
Filled the hall with laughter shrill; A captivating, trim French maid
Dusted bright Pierrettes, arrayed
In white and gold, and orange and black. And with them all, there was no lack
Of that chief requisite, good cheer—
I’m very glad that I was near.
They danced until at a certain sign
They formed themselves in a gleaming line
And marched and skiujied, and with a rush To siqiper, left the hall a-hush.
