by loneliness and sickness, and sometimes by the thirst for gold, had little on which they could count; and the Southerners, in their fall from overweening confidence to the loss of everything but courage and pride, knew for years the certainty of only desolation.
It is true that since our Civil War there has seemed, until lately, to be peace and plenty in this land. Perhaps that led us to forget that this was not always true. It is true, too. that there are many who, wanting safety, close their minds to the thought that there can be anything else, who like to believe and who can make themselves believe that there have been and will be no real changes in their world.
I would not have you close your minds to anything'. Face your insecurity. Fight, if you can, the conditions that have led to it. If you can fight, too, uncertainties that the poor have always faced, so much the better. Remember that men have struggled up from prehistoric times through more than insecurity; that they have not only suffered and died for their beliefs, for their freedom, for their leaders, and for their longing to save others from ignorance and disease, but that they have lived to serve the cause of education, of
health, of humanity in general, and even of generosity, and sweet reasonableness.
For many years many of you have been with us, and we know well your courage and good will. Though you leave us today, we shall not lose you. Always you will carry with you our love and our high hopes for you.
