The Year In Journalism
This year the Beacon staff was headed once again by the journalistic talents o f Robert Paoii. The tri-editors this year were Meeta Sharma, Jen Rowan, and Bill Callahan. Jen and fieeta were news Editors while Bill (Bucky) handled the sports.
Bill Callahan teamed with Jason Soienski, and for part of the year, Molly Snyder, to write his "Bucky's Corner" sports column. They compared and contrasted such issues as: women's place in sports, most memorable events of sports in the eighties, professional sports for seniors who are past their prime, and even a story highlighting past and present W-M athletes and their future. Other potent sports writers included a spirited, wiiling, and aggressive writer in Ross Blacker, a talented Adam Rreitman, sports nut Brian Bosonac, Qautem Sehgai, and Chris Paul.
During the year Meeta Sharma wrote a piece on the issue of flag burning. Since George Bush has declared it legal to burn flags, this has become the most heated argument since abortion. It showed as such responses in the Beacon by Lara Springier and also Stergios Papadakis, who later led a J.S.A. debate on the subject, heated the battle within W-H itself.
Two seniors were profiled this year. Neeta wrote one on school president Jen Torres titled "Torres Thrives on Organization." Bill profiled Matt Stepanski on the record-breaking number of hours he voluntarily worked with the children's specialized hospital-a story in which he was also put on the front cover of two local newspapers.
A special six-page Beacon was printed in the middle of the year. W-H has not had a six-page Beacon other than at the beginning and end of each year for a long time.
Mewswriters under Jen and Meeta included the first-time talents of freshman Bridget Farrell, college tips from Ren Horwitz, play updates from Tara Clifford, movie reviews from Mora Paoii which were 'two thumbs up,' Holly Snyder, Shari Bart, a special on the effects T.V. watching has on children by Callahan, Megan Rehoe, and Mick Zagorski.
Photographers for the Beacon were Dan Cone, Mora Paoii, Tahira Aziz, Lieslie Warner, Minna Mahvi, Shari Bart, Bill Callahan, and Ren Horwitz.
