What We Need Is Here
by Wendell Berry
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon, as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.
Dear Seniors,
fomW-Hfriei As you look toward the near horizon, and the path you have begunto#
chart forward into college and life beyond, I hope you will take timeto
read this poem to yourself a few times. What you have needed has been
i,sai
here. And when you have settled into a new ’’here,” you will find that'itloose what you need is there where you are. Wherever here is for you, what
■iitav you need is there. The trick, of course, is to find it and nurture it. What
you need is here because you carry it within you. Be quiet in heart, and in eye, clear, and you will find your true path, just like the geese inthe poem.
With all best wishes,
