that morning, and she happily flashed a nice diamond ring. At Magic 96.5FM, the Pagara went off as planned
at 6pm, with DJ Vibe and Erin Croes handling out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new with charm and expertise.
That night from my deck overlooking a good portion of Palm Beach & Noord, the Ritz Carlton Resort and
the Marriott Aruba Resort & Stellaris Casino entertained us lighting the sky with professional pyrotechnics,
shot off two pontoons set in the ocean, with large chrysanthemums of light, rockets, missiles, and showers of
sparkling stars, long past midnight. Aruba is the best place to be on new year’s eve!
NEW GENERAL MANAGER. The Tropicana Aruba Resort & Casino has a new General Manager, Rich-
ard Roy, fondly remembered from his days as the GM at the Westin Resort. Richard left the Westin to work
for Starwood Hotels and Resorts in Florida just before the sale of the property to Riu Hotels was announced.
He met his Aruban-born wife Rosanne Roy on the island, at the Westin, and as they became a couple she
successfully continued her career in the Human Resources department of La Cabana Beach Resort & Casino,
where she serves as a much-appreciated, award-winning manager. Rosanne must be happy to see her husband
home again! The Tropicana corporate office must be pleased with their recruit who already knows all there is
to know about the island and how to profitably run a business here.
ISLAND LIFE. The new office of Dimas, the island’s immigration service, was closed for two months
because of an offensive, unbearable smell which turned out to be a filthy pigeon’s nest, filled with pigeon
debris. Two months it took you? Why didn’t you consult the cleaning lady, she would have resolved the issue
in 20 minutes.
LA VIE HAS BEAUTIFUL STUFF. I missed the opening of La Vie, at Antraco and when I walked in last
Saturday I had no need, and no desire to buy a new bed, but after seeing the Rotta, made-in-Brazil, Bahia,
dark coffee king-size bed, I was filled with yearnings for a good night’s sleep. Also beautiful, the Tobacco
colored Irish bed with colonial style shutters, same size, looking very inviting. Rotta furniture is now avail-
able at La Vie, adjacent to Surprise, with delivery and installation included in the purchase price. Rotta offers
solid wood furniture, chests, mirrors, nightstands, in complete bedroom sets. The dining rooms sets are also
attractive, modern, to contemporary and classic, from tables and chairs to tableware, and decorative accents. I
liked one of the rustic tables in the showroom, it looked like a butcher block on wheels, with wrought iron fin-
ishing. Helpful and educated sales associate Zulema Granadillo invites her clients to think green, because
Rotta operates under strict eco-friendly rules, planting as many trees as they cut down, and at the same time,
protecting consumers who buy the furniture from harmful chemicals used in fiber-board furniture!
WHY BOTHER WITH E CARDS. I got a number of e-cards over the holiday period and dutifully open
them because I did not want to appear unappreciative and rude to the people who took the time to send them
to me. Then on one occasion, I decided to send an e-card back to the person who sent me the e-card in the first
place. It remained unopened to this day, despite automatic reminders. You see, I just proved my point, no one
cares for e-cards anymore, so why bother. Send me a text message instead, and make it short, please.
PURE BEACH INTRODUCES A NEW MENU. We went to Pure beach between the holidays and tried a
great number of snacks and appetizers in the company of executive chef Matt Boland and general manager
Gerrit Griffith. Pure Beach, at Divi Aruba Phoenix Beach Resort, is a casual all day dining café and bar, at
the edge of the water with spectacular views of the high rise resorts. The menu was inspired by Divi’s culinary
team of chefs mixing old favorites and new dishes in novel presentations. We tried the Fish Tenders, made of
crispy and flaky flash-fried grouper, served with a mango lime dipping sauce, the Shrimp & Seafood Ceviche
brimming with shrimp, scallops and calamari infused with lime and fresh herbs, served with pickled onions
and peppers and a coconut cocktail sauce; the Greek Beef Tenderloin Kabob, with tenderloin tips, onions and
peppers, topped with feta cheese and Kalamata olives; and the Tuna Tataki, with sesame crusted seared ahi
tuna, served over a wakame seaweed salad with a teriyaki glaze and wasabi aioli. They are all wholeheart-
edly recommended. Try the Kobe Sliders featuring three mini wagyu kobe beef burgers, topped with Gouda
cheese and red wine caramelized onions. Most plates are served with Pure Beach’s Signature Fries, French
fries topped with salt, pepper, truffle oil, Parmesan cheese and garlic, mixing French fries with sweet potato
fries. Yummy.
PRESTIGE REALTY. I met Rachel Noordermeer-Reily at the Knipoog, our hairdresser. We know each
other well from the time she worked as the food & Beverage manager of the Radisson Aruba Resort Casino
& Spa. She then fell in love, and joined Alan Reily in his real estate company. At the time Alan decided to
abandon the development of timeshare resorts and embrace property management. He started in 2007 with
one condo, Rachel joined in 2010, and today reports being active in the rental and management of over 60
properties on the island. With the rise of the demand for villa, condo and vacation rentals, the Riley became
busy and popular. Your simple contact with Rachel, their website declares, will ensure you the best vacation
experience on the island! RC@visitaruba.com
