Diagnosis:
Understand the underlying diagnosis that resulted in an ostomy (e.g., ulcerative
colitis, colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, etc.) in order to direct your clinical
teaching.
Surgery:
The type of surgery and type of diversion – is the ostomy temporary or
permanent and is further surgery planned? For bowel ostomies knowing what
part of the bowel the stoma is constructed from: end or loop, transverse colon,
sigmoid colon, terminal ileum or high volume output loop ileostomy will help to
direct your interventions and patient teaching.
