 Teaching patients the basic anatomy and function of their GI or GU system helps
them to understand and learn about their ostomy

GI Anatomy -Small Intestine

1) Duodenum
2) Jejunum
3) Ileum \ Ileostomy
o Stool consistency is
liquid to semi liquid to
pasty and enzymatic
o Nutrients and extrinsic
factor/Vit B12 complex
and bile salts are
absorbed here
o May need to increase
fluids and omit high fiber
foods for 6- 8wks post
surgery.
