example, a few days prior to the intake, she stated that she ran out onto a street near her
home, "crossed on the red" (against the traffic light) and was hit by a car. Fortunately, she
wasn't hurt, but when she shared this story during the intake, Ms Brown was strikingly blasé
and downplayed the seriousness of the situation. Instead, she seemed to think it was kind of
amusing and shrugged off the any concern given to her. Ms Brown identified anger and
depression as areas of ongoing concern. When asked what happened when she got angry,
she responded “huff and puff." She also threw things, particularly her cell phone. During the
intake, she reported having at least seven phones during the past few months. She also
reported knocking over chairs and other objects when angry.
Ms Brown, a 23-year-old African American female, had a history of severe physical abuse
and neglect by her biological mother during infancy and as a toddler. Furthermore, the biological
mother was known to have chronic substance abuse issues. Ms Brown was born with syphilis
and herpes and there was also reference of consideration of a possible diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol

Syndrome in the records. Ms Brown was in DHS custody since her removal from the home
at age two years, eight months, after she was thrown against a wall by her biological mother.
She sustained serious medical injuries that required hospitalization and the biological
mother was criminally charged and incarcerated for approximately three years.
Ms Brown had been through several treatments with different psychiatrists. She refused
to be given medication although she had severe depression. In her first therapy, she was willing
to open up discussing about her childhood and past traumas. Unfortunately, she stopped her
therapy due to personal reasons although the therapy seemed to help her. Fourteen months later,
she sought another treatment with another psychiatrist after a series of panic attacks. As the result

of her panic attacks, she admitted to doing self-harm. There were numerous wound and scars
found in her body. This time, she was given medication which significantly helped her. Once
feeling better, she decided to stop her treatment altogether without consulting to her psychiatrist.
Ms Brown had a relapse two years ago which prompted her to get help again. In this treatment,
she was given both therapy and medications.
