This astronaut became the second person to walk on the moon. He was the
pilot of Eagle, the Apollo 11 lunar module that carried him and Neil Armstrong to
the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969. This was the first moon landing. The
National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) of the United States
considered it to be the most spectacular accomplishment of the U.S. space
program at that time.
Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, in 1930, Aldrin is the only son of a United
States Army officer. Aldrin graduated third in his class at West Point, the U.S.
Military Academy. He joined the Air Force and became a jet pilot in the Korean
War.
Buzz Aldrin studied space travel at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
where he earned a doctor of science degree in astronautics. He became an expert
in rendezvous and docking the meeting and joining together of two crafts
moving through space. Aldrin’s knowledge of rendezvous and docking techniques
contributed to the success of the Apollo program.
Aldrin began astronaut training in 1964. His first space trip was in November
1966 on the Gemini 12 mission in Earth orbit, during which he worked in space
outside his spacecraft for five and a half hours.
