Many years later a newly
emerging power, the USA,
also began to show interest in
building a canal that would join
the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
An international organization
was established in 1876, and in
1878 it obtained authorization
from the Colombian
government to begin digging
a canal across the isthmus.
