In your body, genes give instructions to your cells. They tell cells what to do in
everything whether it’s determining when to start puberty or determining the
shape of your nose. Genes affect how you look and act. It can even affect your
health. These genes are unique in each person, and they come from their parents.
Genetics is the study of genes, or heredity how people’s looks and other
qualities are passed down to them from their parents, and even from the
generations before them. Most children look like their parents, right? Through
genetics, we understand the science of why they do. Your dimple, the color of
your eyes, your curly hair is all because of your genes. Even things like talent for
music or drawing can be linked to your heredity. Sometimes people notice other
traits, and make comments like ‘you dance like your father’. Knowing about
genetics can help you understand yourself better. This helps you figure out what
you can change about yourself, and what you can’t.
Unless you have an identical twin, there is not another person on the planet
with a set of genes exactly like yours! Even identical twins differ in many ways.
