A nut is the fruit of a plant. Each nut has an outer covering, or shell, containing
the seed the part of the nut that you eat.
Peanuts are the most popular nuts in the United States . Peanuts are not true
nuts but are related to the pea family . They grow under the ground and each
shell usually contains two nuts. Peanuts are eaten roasted, salted, or dried. They
are used in making cookies and, of course, peanut butter. Peanuts are crushed to
get peanut oil, which is an important oil that is used in cooking.
Pecans are one in the hickory family of trees. Raising pecans is an important
industry in the southern states, such as Georgia and Louisiana. Pecan trees are
large and fast-growing, and the nuts are very nourishing. Some nutritionists say
that a pound of shelled pecans gives as much nutrition as five pounds of beef.
Chestnuts are scarce in the United States. All of the edible chestnuts sold in the
United States are imported from Europe. Chestnuts should be cooked before they
are eaten. Other kinds of nuts such as walnuts, hazelnuts, beechnuts, hickory
nuts, and almonds are also grown in the United States, but many nuts you buy in
the store come from faraway lands. Brazilian nuts, cashew nuts, pistachio nuts,
macadamia nuts and coconuts come from other countries of the world.
