 through riots, protests, and in some




 cases,  even  murder.  One  of   the



 most well known leaders of  these



 rebellions was Demark Vesey. Vesey




 was a slave from the beginning



 but later bought his freedom and



 spent his money learning carpentry




 in Charleston. In 1818 he was



 preaching to slaves giving them




 hope of  freedom. These meetings



 however would actually be meetings




 to hold an uprising against abusive



 slave owners. Over 9,000 slaves
