In order to narrow down, isolate,

      and formally diagnose people

      with irritable bowel syndrome,

      the medical community has

      set certain parameters.

      To be diagnosed with IBS,

      the symptoms of IBS must

have occurred in the last three

      months, persisted for a

      minimum of six months

      and occurred with a minimum

      frequency of three episodes

      per month.
