John Pemberton, a pharmacist

in Atlanta, GA, first concocted

the cola syrup in 1886.

The syrup was intended to be

used for medicinal purposes

but sales were poor and

so Pemberton turned to

Asa Candler who bought

the formula and began

aggressively marketing it

as a refreshing soft drink.
