The first FIFA World Cup
Tournament was held in
Uruguay, in 1930.
The Great Depression had
begun, and because of
economic constraints only 13
countries participated in that
first tournament.
In the finals of the 1930 series,
Uruguay defeated Argentina to
become the very first World
Cup champion.
